The Isle of
Mull has something for
all the family.
Situated on the edge
of
the picturesque village
of Dervaig on the Isle of Mull, 8 miles from the main town of
Tobermory.
The clean white sands of Calgary beach are only 6 miles away,
and the house is a 40 minute drive away from theCraignur e to Oban
ferry terminal.
There are plenty of local interest, guide books and maps for
exploring Mull!
The wildlife and scenery are spectacular, there is the opportunity to
visit the islands of Iona
and Staffa from Mull, and Tobermory's brightly coloured harbour front
(just 20 minutes away by road) is the inspiration for the popular
children's
television programme - Balamory. The Isle of Mull is famous for its
wildlife
and inparticularly whale watching trips are a must.
The Isle is also known for its sea eagles, golden eagles seals, otters,
and dolphins.
Dervaig is an ideal base for many Outdoor Pursuits including walking,
cycling,
wildlife watching, horse riding, trout and salmon fishing, sailing and
scuba diving.
There are many forestry trails which you can follow, although the more
adventurous and experienced
may wish to go wherever their mood and the weather takes them.
Legislation
in
Scotland enables members of the public
to have almost total freedom to enjoy the countryside.
Other sports, including badminton, are also catered
for in
Dervaig,
and there is access to an enclosed all-weather pitch for football,
tennis and basketball.
Mull is around 300 square miles in area, with a coastline of around 360
miles,
which consists of steep cliffs, white sandy beaches, rocky coves and
large sea lochs.
A large part is sparsely populated, which is ideal for wildlife.
Marine wildlife includes basking sharks, minke whales, dolphins,
porpoises,
otters and grey seals. On land there are red deer, feral goats and
mountain hare.
In the sky, you can see white tailed eagles, golden eagles, peregrine
falcons,
hen harriers, buzzards, golden plover, grouse, and ptarmigan.
Tourism is
the mainstay of Mull’s economy,
therefore, there are a growing number of wildlife tours operating on
the island,
both on land and on the water. It is advisable to book before you come,
as they are very popular. The tour operators will pick you up from your
door
and return you after a fabulous day of sea eagle, deer, and otter
watching.
Or take you out on the calm, local waters to see seal, whales and
dolphins.
There
are many places of interest to explore on Mull including castles,
gardens,
picturesque
churches and beautiful sandy beaches.
Not
to mention the other smaller islands off the coast of Mull
which
have their own attractions –
Staffa
(Fingal's Cave), the Treshnish Isles and of course, Iona.
There
are also many excellent eating establishments to try,
interesting
shops,
and a new spa and leisure pool at the Isle of Mull
Hotel.
If
you are bringing the younger members of the family, there is plenty
for them to do
The
brightly coloured houses in Tobermory are home to the CBeebies
programme – Balamory,
and
the sandy beaches and children’s farm have plenty to keep them
amused.
